The Pandemic special

Its been a while and its been worthwhile. So much has happened since our last post and so much has happened this year. The pandemic happened and threw all our lives into chaos. Now we have the political uprising and the stand against police brutality. Safe to say it's been a year of set backs,
amidst all the chaos, there were positive moments. The faculty of law, the law students' society and even the individual law student have all experienced some sort of growth.
The law student society came under knew leadership after the immediate past president of the society resigned for reasons best known to him(Giggles). After the cacophony of voices blew bye, the new leadership of the society couldn't have much of an impact as school was unexpectedly halted.
Needless to say the semester couldn't proceed as usual, regular student society activities couldn't proceed as usual and as a result we couldn't even have our annual law week.
However some matters are of more importance than others and some of the more important activities may hold albiet in a different form. This brings us to the upcoming law students society's elections coming up in the near future. But that's a topic for another day.
but finally we are back. So welcome back from our hiatus. We will be keeping you updated with all the happenings of the society as they unfold. Cheers and wear a mask😷😷😷😷

POETRY; BEAUTY OF THE WORLD by Aliyu Suleiman Janyau

ohh! Dear world
where and when would you end?
the daffodils is nothing compared to your beauty,
your beauty makes all the creatures in it whirl by,

The bird perches on the tree in the morning,
and another in the evening,
we sold our pride and cherry on the beauty of the world,

the beauty of the world makes us blind,
like a moving owl in the day,
your beaut makes us forget the next world,

when shall we regain our sight?

POETRY; JAILER by Ganiyat Abdulraheem

I'm caged in your prison,
all I can do is run through my heart,
you are trapped in my heart,
it's difficult for you to escape,
I am forever your prisoner,
there can't be a better prison than yours,
my heart melts at your thought,
the smile on your face keeps giving me life,

POETRY: I CARRY YOUR HEART WITH ME - Barakat Jummai Akanbi

I carry your heart with me,
my heart was always like an empty stage,
I detest the word love,
but how love came in I do not know,

I remember your stares towards me,
your first approach,
those words still echo till date,
I remember those sleepless nights,
those heart warming messages,
heart so caring and gentle,
and until the very last drop of my blood i would forever be yours.

POETRY: APRIL LOVE (OLD TOYS) - OGUNLEYE TAOFEEQ

April is the cruelest month,
agape she heard the call,
the call of love.
the day is well nigh done!
now my life-blood seemed to sip!

alone, alone, all, all alone,
alone on a wide wide earth!
and never a saint took pity on
my soul in agony.

i looked upon the attractive face,
and drew my eyes away,
i looked upon the attractive face again,
and there the new rotting lover guy sitting
close to her.

i looked to heaven, cried in my room,
and tied to pray,
but a prayer had gust,
a wicked whisper came, and made
my heart as dry as dust.

the new  rotting lover guy love
the lady the guy,
but the new rotting lover guy is
still as a slave before his lord!

since then, at an uncertain hour,
that agony returns;
this heart within me burns.

her voice is as soft as honey-dew
I will always love you till
DEATH takes me away from you.

I dedicate this poem to a special  lady
name: still known by my learning colleagues

History of Valentine's Day

Roman Roots

The history of Valentine's Day is obscure, and further clouded by various fanciful legends. The holiday's roots are in the ancient Roman festival ofLupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15.Pope Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be St. Valentine's Day.

Valentines Galore

Which St. Valentine this early pope intended to honor remains a mystery: according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by that name. One was a priest in Rome, another a bishop in Terni, and of a third St. Valentine almost nothing is known except that he met his end in Africa. Rather astonishingly, all three Valentines were said to have been martyred on Feb. 14.
Most scholars believe that the St. Valentine of the holiday was a priest who attracted the disfavor of Roman emperor Claudius II around 270. At this stage, the factual ends and the mythic begins. According to one legend, Claudius II had prohibited marriage for young men, claiming that bachelors made better soldiers. Valentine continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies but was eventually apprehended by the Romans and put to death. Another legend has it that Valentine, imprisoned by Claudius, fell in love with the daughter of his jailer. Before he was executed, he allegedly sent her a letter signed "from your Valentine." Probably the most plausible story surrounding St. Valentine is one not focused on Eros (passionate love) but on agape (Christian love): he was martyred for refusing to renounce his religion.
In 1969, the Catholic Church revised its liturgical calendar, removing the feast days of saints whose historical origins were questionable. St. Valentine was one of the casualties.

Chaucer's Love Birds

It was not until the 14th century that this Christian feast day became definitively associated with love. According to UCLA medieval scholar Henry Ansgar Kelly, author of Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine, it was Chaucer who first linked St. Valentine's Day with romance.
In 1381, Chaucer composed a poem in honor of the engagement between England's Richard II and Anne of Bohemia. As was the poetic tradition, Chaucer associated the occasion with a feast day. In "The Parliament of Fowls," the royal engagement, the mating season of birds, and St. Valentine's Day are linked:
For this was on St. Valentine's Day,
When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate.

Tradition of Valentine's Cards

Flower
Over the centuries, the holiday evolved, and by the 18th century, gift-giving and exchanging handmade cards on Valentine's Day had become common in England. Hand-made valentine cards made of lace, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts eventually spread to the American colonies. The tradition of Valentine's cards did not become widespread in the United States, however, until the 1850s, when Esther A. Howland, a Mount Holyoke graduate and native of Worcester, Mass., began mass-producing them. Today, of course, the holiday has become a booming commercial success. According to the Greeting Card Association, 25% of all cards sent each year are valentines.

Poetry: SANDS OF TIME by Jummai

SANDS OF TIME
The life of our Heroes,
All reminds us,
Nothing good comes easy,
We either struggle to make it or,
Stay idle and remain poor ,
Definitely we must live,
Our lifes  Sublime,
Someday we depart.
And we leave behind us "Footprints" ,
 On the Sands of Time.
